THE WHERE AND WHY OF THE UFOS HAUNTING OUR SKIES

Several distinct kinds of UFO haunt the skies over Britain - and they have preferred “flight paths” too, says the author of a new UFO-hunters manual.

“People who claim to have been abducted have met evil and good aliens,” says Nigel Watson, author of The Haynes UFO Investigations Manual. “They often say that planet Earth is a battleground for these opposing forces.”

Haynes have published car manuals since 1956 - but their latest book focuses on a nippier and more elusive vehicle - “Unidentified Flying Objects.” or UFOs.

Watson says there is more than enough information for a guide - “thousands” of sightings, from crashed spacecraft to abductions to glowing balls in the sky - all documented by the Ministry of Defence.

Several distinct kinds of UFO haunt the skies over Britain - and they have preferred “flight paths” too, says Watson.

“Flying saucers are still seen today,” says Watson. “The term flying saucer was coined after Kenneth Arnold spotted 9 disc-shaped objects flying over Mount Rainier, USA, on 24 June 1947.”

“The most common sightings are classified by ufologists as 'nocturnal lights' or UFOs seen more than 152m (500ft) away from the witness, which are known as 'Close Encounters of the First Kind' cases,” says Watson. “Cases that involve encountering a landed UFO or meetings with their occupants are much rarer.”

A Ministry of Defence investigation concluded that many “lights” may be plasma balls in the atmosphere, of a type unknown to science.

Watson says that UFOs (and their fans) tend to show up “in the same areas for decades”.

“In the UK, Warminster, Wiltshire, Cannock Chase, Staffordshire, Bonnybridge, Scotland, Pembrokeshire, Wales and the Pennines are just some of their favourite haunting ares,” says Watson.

Fans flock to those areas, he adds. “There are some rare cases of people being zapped by lights from UFOs, but otherwise they don't present any danger. A good set of binoculars, camera, note book and star charts are the basic equipment. Some ufologists use more sophisticated UFO hunting equipment that includes video cameras that can obtain infrared images of UFOs invisible to the human eye.”

“One of the earliest cases that involved Betty and Barney Hill occurred in September 1961. They saw a UFO as they drove from Canada to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA. When they got home they realised they could not account for 2 hours of their journey time. Through hypnotic regression they independently remembered being taken inside a flying saucer for a thorough medical examination.”

Watson says that government studies around the world have never come to any firm conclusions on whether UFOs really are from other worlds.

“It took a long time for ufologists to be convinced that abduction cases are worth investigating. These often involve people being involuntarily snatched away from their beds in the middle of the night.

"Prior to 1947, anything unusual in the sky was reported as a phantom airship or aeroplane, and during WWII balls of light were seen by allied pilots that were called 'foo fighters'.”

Other scientists suggest that any technologically advanced civilisation would be unlikely to “reveal” itself in the form of blurred photos - or involuntary medical exams.

“Many that occur at night might be due to psychologically-based causes like sleep paralysis or very intense dreams,” says Watson. “As with most aspects of ufology it is hard to find totally convincing evidence and that is why the subject still intrigues me.”

THE WHERE AND WHY OF THE UFOS HAUNTING OUR SKIES - PART II

If you missed Part I of this series click here.

Nasa space expert Robert Freitas suggested in 1983 that any probes in our solar system may have been designed not to be seen, using technologies far beyond those available to us.

Forgan says, “The probe camouflages itself so as to set up a threshold test of the technology or intelligence of the recipient species, where the test must be met before the species is allowed to communicate with the device.”

“Project Condign was a secret UFO study funded by the Ministry of Defence between 1997 – 2000, which concluded that Unidentified Aerial Phenomena were often caused by rare plasma balls not fully understood by modern science,” says Watson. “At the moment the British Government does not conduct any type of UFO investigations, unless the UFO sightings indicate the activities of enemy aircraft.

“It would be good to have a team dedicated to studying UFO reports and communication with aliens, but I can't see the Government funding such a study. Also, as my book shows, official studies conducted in the USA and elsewhere have never come to any firm conclusions.

Watson himself believes that most UFO sightings are not vehicles from outer space but perhaps of “rare aerial phenomena unknown to science”.

“John Rimmer is one of the most interesting UFOlogists I met,” says Watson. “He has edited Magonia magazine (now a website) since the 1970s, and has always taken a critical look at the dubious evidence and explanations put forward by ufologists. He has pioneered what is known as the psychosociological approach to the subject which opposes the main belief that UFOs are of an extraterrestrial origin.”

Erratic Orb-like Lights Over Pennsylvania Skies?

» Erratic Orb-like Lights Over Pennsylvania Skies?Erratic Orb-like Lights Over Pennsylvania Skies? Roger Marsh's picture By Roger Marsh - 5 days 21 hours ago Photo Credit: Wikipedia

A Pennsylvania couple at Danville reported watching a light fall from the sky that appeared to stop and hover and looking like an "orb or bubble" before shooting off in a new direction, according to March 15, 2013, testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The Montour County couple was outside on their front porch smoking when the object was first seen.

"I was looking in sky and watched this thing fall and come to complete stop in mid air," the husband reported. "I told her to look and she then saw what turned into a white orb or bubble."

They continued to watch the object.

"Then it moved down slowly and in a matter of 20 seconds it shot off into the sky in a different direction."

UFO's;Mothership And Its Fleet's; Seen In London Skies - HULIQ.com

A UFO formation photographed over Morristown, Pennsylvania, January 2009.

Have we finally acquired incontrovertible proof of extraterrestrial visitation? Or has someone well-versed in special effects gimmickry simply posted another in a long line of UFO video hoaxes on YouTube? Perhaps it is even an example of guerilla marketing, a precursor to more videos -- or movie trailers -- to come? All these explanations have been suggested in the past few days as millions have accessed the video (said to be one of three) of a UFO "mothership" and its attendant "fleet" of smaller UFOs caught skimming the cloud-fille skies above London. The video has, of course, gone viral.

First uploaded by alymc01 on June 24, the setting is London on a cloudy day. The viewer enters with the videographer running down a sidewalk near the BBC Building to a corner where several people on both sides of the street are already looking up at the sky. The viewer is then presented with several bright lights -- and several fainter lit images -- moving across the sky from the videographer's left to right. Bout one minute into the slightly more than two-minute video, a larger, brighter white disc appears and slowly performs a few rotating maneuvers before moving off.

The UFO video, entitled "UFOs Over London BBC Radio 1 Building," is accompanied by the caption: "Right - took over a week to get it....but finally managed to get these critters on camera on a clear day, and even get a close-up. It seems to be attracting quite a crowd now when they appear. Can anyone explain what on earth these lights are please?"

A quick glance below each of the uploaded videos (EllasVirgo currently has the most views, pulling in over 2 million views to date) and the answer to alymc01's question seems to have been in the affirmative. Many believe the video to be a hoax. Some are saying it is proof that the aliens have come. Some are saying it could be a marketing campaign for an upcoming science fiction movie, possibly "Iron Sky."

In fact, Benjamin Radford at Life's Little Mysteries, a sister website to LiveScience, posted a somewhat detailed debunking of the video, noting that the video's "crudeness" may be the best evidence of its "fakery."

Radford offers: "The mothership and its UFO siblings videotaped over London are among the absolute easiest images to fake: glowing ovals and dots. There's no detail, no flying saucer windows or aliens waving hello from high above. Just white moving dots that anyone with some video-editing chops could create with little effort."

Radford also points out the inordinate amount of time the videographer takes getting the reaction of the people looking up at the sky. Although this could presumably be explained by noting that the videographer could have been confused by what was causing the disturbance, but, as Radford points out, the videographer pulls the focus of the video from the skies above about halfway through the video to again pan the passersby. Radford believes this to be the strongest evidence of a hoax: Wouldn't someone recording an event like the appearance of UFOs be more interested in the UFOs than in getting the reactions of those observing the mysterious flying objects?

Radford is joined in his skepticism by Steve Mostyn at The Tech Herald, who notes that it is "worth noting that the footage was captured in close proximity to The Mill and Framestore, two of the world’s leading special effects houses for the movie industry."

Another possible indicator that the video is a hoax is its appearance on YouTube instead of on some media outlet website or television channel. An authentic video capturing the first images of possible extraterrestrial visitation would be of inestimable value. Of course, the videographer could be of a non-capitalist bent, a more free-share type of individual.

So... is it another hoax or is it an authentic video of a grouping of UFOs? Or, like the Phoenix Lights formation captured by several videographers in 1997, could it have a rational explanation as a sensational incident caused by more mundane events (like a string of slow-burning flares dropped by passing planes on military maneuvers)?

Regardless, videos and images like the London UFO "mothership and its fleet" will continue to draw interest, fake or not. It is part of human nature to question, to wonder, to quest, to discover, to solve. And even if all such images could eventually be explained, they are testament to the very human need to imagine and dream -- if only of what might be possible.

Do Extraterrestrials Really Fly Our Skies

Please note that this article is not a blog entry or a blogpost or journal entry that does not contain informative content beyond a personal story or experience and it is not correspondence to a blog comment or email that I have received.

I think that when we see headlines saying "Abducted by Aliens" and regular stories telling of all sorts of reputable people having seen UFO's in the sky, we really begin to wonder about the sanity of some of them. However, not to be completely put off by what many may consider to be the ramblings of attention seekers, I certainly have my own opinions on the subject but there was this one guy I spent some time with recently, and I was quick to find out that even with his PhD and a couple of other degrees, he was anything but a geek or for that matter a cynic. Over one or two pints of cool Rickard's Red, he told me that he had been studying the so called phenomenon of UFO's for many years. With me being neither a believer nor disbeliever, he went on to tell me that his research was now providing him with factual evidence that these aptly named UFO's do in fact exist, but they were not extraterrestrial in nature! Well, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion and I certainly have my own here.

Initially, once he realized he had caught my interest, he started telling me some of the many stories of people claiming how Aliens had abducted them and why, in his opinion they had actually been abducted and taken into a strange craft. He emphasized that in his opinion it was most certainly not by Aliens. He went on to tell me of one particular abduction case he had follow up in detail with the claimant, and even to his surprise, his findings were not only astonishing but almost conclusive in their results. To be truthful, I was beginning to wonder slightly. He did seem genuine and authentic to me, but I have heard so many stories on the subject of UFO's that I had already formed an opinion that it was all comic book material. However, from this story he continued with yet another. This one was about a young Woman who also claimed to have been abducted for almost a full week. Again, he had studied the case at close hand and had interviewed the woman over five visits, with carefully planned and detailed questions. He confirmed to me that the answers he recorded only served to convince him more of what was really happening with regard to many UFO sightings and why he was now so close to publishing factual proof of their non-extraterrestrial existence. I thought that his factual proof might not necessarily be representative of fact to myself.

Obviously by the end of my second pint, and this continual and highly detailed one-sided conversation pounding me endlessly, I was beginning to wonder if perhaps I was the one about to be abducted by a potential madman. I decided to buy one last round for us and hear the rest of his story and now you my dear reader, will know that my writing of this article is the proof that I stayed there much longer than initially planned, and that I did hear the rest of his amazing story and more. By now I had reached an opinion that this guy was really serious about what he was telling me and he obviously had strong beliefs in the evidence he had researched too. I watched him with his eyebrows slightly raised and a penetrating look back across the table at me, the guy continued to tell me how he could now prove in at least two alleged abduction cases, the people abducted had actually been taken into a strange craft, and then flown at seemingly very high speed into the darkness of space and back again. However, the story became even more interesting when I was informed that the craft they were taken in, actually originated here on Earth and was being flown by humans and not Aliens.

This is where things became complicated for me. He then tells me that these strange craft do come from Earth, but not from Earth, as we know it. More confusing explanation was thrown in amidst my interjected questions and then the surprise came. He now started speaking slowly and distinctly as he explained that his evidence pointed towards the year 2140 and to the North American continent in particular. The results gained from all his interviews had shown him that people living in the year 2140, in particular people from what he called the Federated Government, had managed to create a form of what we would call time travel, but only time travel to the past he was quick to add. He explained that similar to our present day University system, the Federated Government in the year 2140 were taking what we would call Students back in time to our present day, I suppose on a field trip of sorts. They were coming back in time to study human life in different time periods, and this is why the strange 'UFO's' have been seen in skies all over our World throughout history and even back in biblical times. Details were given of how they could simply abduct people, take them away for days on end and then return them to what seemed like maybe one hour after they had been abducted. He also explained how the UFO's appeared to move so strangely in the sky, shifting their positions dramatically and appearing to travel across the whole sky in a matter of seconds. Rest assured, now I was really listening intently.

Amidst much of the proof he was detailing to me, he told me how these two particular people interviewed in depth by him had provided very specific details of where they had been taken in the craft. Also how his studies had provided him with proof that these geographic locations were real and did actually exist, here on Earth today. The buildings described were totally different but the topography and landscapes described gave sufficient detail to make them locatable today. He had visited both of the described locations personally, taking measurements and photographs to provide comparison to what his interviewees had described. Now wondering if the Rickard's Red had taken over my head, I questioned him about how people had described their supposed Alien abductors as having long thin arms and large black almond shaped eyes. To which I was quickly interrupted and told that these "Visitors" as he preferred to call them, all dress in a type of uniform highly reflective all in one suit, complete with facial and head cover with black visor eye shapes. This is why they look like Aliens to people who have been slightly disorientated by the application of a nasal sprayed drug. He even explained that these visitors appeared to have long arms because in the years up towards 2140, natural evolution had in fact made people shorter in height with slightly longer arms and as there was no obesity in the future, everyone would naturally look thin. Boy, this guy was sure convincing and certainly highly intelligent too. He went on to give more examples of the mysterious UFO's and the sightings that had been catalogued in previous years.

His descriptions and explanations were both vivid and intriguing, making me wonder just how much of his personal time this guy was spending on these studies. The explained why the visitors could only travel back in time and the relevance of matter and anti matter. How their technology depended on the bending of light and how it used Earth's natural gravity and the magnetic field as an endless resource in part of the propulsion system. Captain James T Kirk had nothing on these guys, who regularly seemed to appear in our skies without any advanced warning from our Earth bound radar scanners. In summary of our lengthy and detailed discussion on the aspects of UFO sightings, I can say that convincing he was. Convinced I was not. In reality, if what this guy was telling me turned out to be true, then it would certainly give a wholesome one off explanation to cover and satisfy almost ever sighting and encounter ever recorded on file.

The proof? Well, I suppose it's out there somewhere or maybe it's already here. Perhaps known only to certain government officials. It could even be that the infamous Area 51 really does have something to do with it all as it is a popular location for UFO sightings. The conversation that evening certainly inspired me in some ways and as such, I am now writing a book, which I have based on the subject. I am calling it 'The Clouds Of Time'. As for us Earth bound people of the present day, my opinion is that the real truth is certainly out there somewhere, and for us to discover it with conclusive proof, it looks like it will be just a matter of time! From the lengthy and detailed conversation that evening, I have to admit that my personal opinions of the subject of extraterrestrials tended to vary somewhat from their original status. I have since researched numerous sightings and even abductions on the internet and after endless note taking, making comparisons and drawing conclusions, I really am no further forward. Suffice to say, if my anonymous friend turns out to be correct is his assumptions, then it is likely to be years before anyone can provide conclusive proof. One thing's for sure; People still continue to report seeing strange things flying in our sky's at night and sometimes, even during the day. Are they flown by extraterrestrials? Who really knows for sure, expect perhaps the ones flying them? Until conclusive proof is established, we shall all have to continue to wait and wonder, or be lucky enough to be on of the future abductions and find out first hand.
